The Top Southern Rock Songs of All Time
Growing up in the South, I absolutely LOVE Southern Rock.
I’ve been to my share of Lynyrd Skynyrd concerts, played “Freebird” and “Tuesday’s Gone” on repeat during road trips, and teared up a bit when Gregg Allman passed away.
I once got hit on by the drummer for Molly Hatchett.
You get the picture…
And no, the Molly Hatchett drummer was not successful in his pursuit of then 21 year-old me.
One of my favorite websites- http://ultimateclassicrock.com– just released a list of the “Top 35 Southern Rock Songs of All Time”, and for once, I can’t really argue with a”Best Of” music list:
1. “Whipping Post”, The Allman Brothers Band:
YESSSSS! This song will forever be on my playlist. Everything about it is pure Southern Rock perfection.
2. “Free Bird”, Lynyrd Skynyrd:
Well, maybe this one should be #1… either way, one of the best Southern Rock songs of all time. I just heard it earlier today and cranked up the dial to rock out to it on the way home from the gym.
3. “Sweet Home Alabama”, Lynyrd Skynyrd:
Well, yeah.
Turn it UP!
4. “Midnight Rider”, Gregg Allman:
5. “Ramblin’ Man”, The Allman Brothers Band:
6. “La Grange”, ZZ Top:
7. “Dixie Chicken”, Little Feat:
Full disclosure: I recently learned that the lyrics were “Tennessee Lamb” not “Tennessee Man”.
So, I’ve been singing it wrong for decades.
Oh, well.
8. “Can’t You See”, The Marshall Tucker Band:
9. “Gimme Three Steps”, Lynyrd Skynyrd:
10. “Simple Man”, Lynyrd Skynyrd:
This song hits a bit different now that I have a son.
And yes, half of the Top 10 are Skynyrd songs, as they shoud be. I just think “Tuesday’s Gone” should be in the Top 10.
Other than that, I can’t really argue the logic.
