Song of the week

Kacey Musgraves “I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You”

I’ve been out of the music loop the past few weeks due to vacation, and then a sick dog.

Ok, I’m baaaccckkk and I’ve been waiting for this one…

Kacey. Freaking. Musgraves.

Ya’ll.

I know this song has been covered a million times, but somehow Kacey can make anything sound special and original.  Her voice is flawless and has a haunting quality about it, and she definitely understood the assignment on this one.

Righhhtttt? Damn, Kacey.

Of course, this cover is off of the Elvis biopic soundtrack, which by the way, is in theaters as of today.

Find out more about the soundtrack- which is pretty fantastic- here.

New Carrie Underwood Is Here!

Carrie Underwood is back with new music today! It’s been a few years since she’s released a solo Country single, so I was curious to hear what she had for us this morning.

I was NOT disappointed.

I actually think this is one of my favorite of hers. Way better than that “Southbound” mess she put out a few years ago.  Carrie is a true vocalist, and I like her better on either ballads, or haunting songs like this.  The party/drinking songs…I just don’t buy it on her.

Anyhow, after hearing this new single, I’m excited to hear what else she’s got for us this year.

New Kids, Rick Astley, Salt N Pepa AND En Vogue? YES, PLEASE!!!

Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s, New Kids on the Block, Rick Astley, Salt N Pepa and En Vogue were radio staples, and I was into all of them! So, last year, when the Mixtape Tour was announced, I got a little giddy about the line-up. It’s every middle-aged woman’s dream!

Yes, if you’re excited about this, you are middle aged. Own it.

And what shows my middle-age cred even more is how much I love this collab of all the artists menitoned above that dropped this week called “Bring Back the Time” and the muisc video that goes along with it. It pays homage to the great music videos of the 80’s MTV era.

You see kids, before MTV was all lame ass reality shows, it was actual badass music videos, and it was glorious.

Isn’t that the best? It totally made my week.

Check out the Mixtape tour dates here!

New Morgan Wallen “Wasted On You”

Morgan Wallen keeps on comin’ with the big hits. His album “Dangerous” was the #1 selling album of 2021 despite being “cancelled” (over 3 million copies sold, which is a massive number, especially these days) and it keeps spawning hit after hit.

His latest radio release is another surefire #1.  “Wasted on You” is a well-written heartbreak song that anyone who has ever drowned their heartbreak in Jack Daniels can relate to.  What I like about Morgan’s music is that he bridges old and new Country and puts out songs that almost every Country fan can approve of.

That’s really hard to do.

New Mammoth WVH!

The newest radio single by Mammoth WVH (Fronted by the son of the late, great Eddie Van Halen’s song Wolfgang) is one of my favorite new releases on Rock radio right now.  I was really hoping this would be his latest single, and that wish was granted.

“Epiphany” has all the stuff I like- great bass line and guitar riff, passionate vocals, and a power chorus.  I’m betting this will be #1 on the Active Rock charts by the Spring. Calling it now.

Thank you, Eddie Van Halen, for the music and for passing that talent onto your son!

Check Out This ERNEST/Morgan Wallen Collab!

I’m all for REAL Country music, and when this song hit my inbox, I immediately fell in love with it!  Up and Comer ERNEST has a true Country voice and style, and when you combine it with Morgan Wallen, you’ve got modern Country GOLD.

“Flower Shops” has one of my new favorite lines “Violets and Daisies to hide all the crazy”.  The song is already #1 on itunes, and I’m thinking it’s just starting it’s run as a chart topper.  I’m happy to kick off the new year with some real Country music… I hope this trend cotinues the rest of the year!  I can’t wait to hear more from both ERNEST and Morgan in the coming months.  As for Morgan, it looks like Country music has moved on from his controversy of last year, as his album “Dangerous” was the #1 album of 2021. NOT just in Country music, but across all the genres.  Say what you will about him, the guy has chops.

Plus, if you want some bad Country music behavior- go look up what George Jones and Randy Travis -two legends- got into in their day.  We just didn’t have the social media to blow things up.

Also, clearly, mullets are here to stay.

New Miranda Lambert!

Yeah, so I know I always feature Miranda Lambert’s new music on my blog, but only because Miranda continues to deliver great Country music.  I feel like she only gets better, and her new single “If I Was a Cowboy” is definitely going into my playlist, like pretty much everything else that she has.

“If I were a Cowboy, I’d Be Queen”

Ya damn right.

She’s working on a new album, and just dropped a holiday album with her side project “The Pistol Annies” today, so if you’re a Miranda fan like I am, you’ve got plenty to look forward to!

New Song of the Week: 7-29-21

Not gonna lie, the first time I heard that “Gossip Girl” actress Taylor Momsen was going to front a hard rock band, I may have rolled my eyes.  I totally take that gesture back, as I feel she has more than proven herself as a rock vocalist, and The Pretty Reckless has been kicking some serious tail on the rock radio scene these past few years.  Yep- I was totally wrong. And their latest release “Only Love Can Save Me Now” keeps the badassery coming.

Love the opening riffs, and Taylors vocals are perfect for the genre.  I’ve always dug strong Alto voices (maybe because I’m an Alto?) and Taylor rocks it.  And as always, I’m happy to see more women in Mainstream Rock.  People complain about the lack of women in Country… but we need more women on the Rock scene as well.  Women like Taylor, Amy Lee and Lzzy Hale are blazing that much needed trail!

Jon Pardi Covering Metallica Because… Why Not?

As you may know, Metallica is celebrating the 30th anniversary of their “Black” album in September with a bunch of re-releases and artists covering some of the biggest hits from the album.  They chose Country star Jon Pardi (Who I just love!) to cover “Wherever I May Roam”. At first, I thought, “Um, really? How is THAT going to work?”

You know what? It does.

Jon Pardi can rock, but still keep his Country twang that’s he’s known for.  I know some die-hard rockers will hate it because they are allergic to Country, but if you keep an open mind, I think one can appreciate the effort.

I can’t wait for the “Black Album” anniversary, and to hear more renditions of Metallica’s best!

The New Ed Sheeran is FIRE!

Ed Sheeran is easily one of the best Pop artists of the modern generation.  And what I’m loving is that he is changing the game a little bit with his new song “Bad Habits”- it’s a totally different sound (and look!) for him, and I am all here for it.

The song is pop perfection- fun, easy to listen to, and very 80’s pop-ish. I fell like Ed is taking a page from The Weeknd’s musical playbook, and why not? While some music heads complain about it, I’m all for it. Then again, I loooooove cheesy 80’s pop, so a resurgence in modern music is right up my alley.  I dug this song the first time I listened to it, and I can’t wait to hear what else Ed has for us this year.

Change is good, and Ed can pull it off.
